“Constructive” Introduction
The war within “Little Iraq” amongst its ill-trained
soldiers caught under friendly-enemy fire. In her three-part article, “Even
Odds”, Jill Tucker talks about the current tragic circumstances of Oakland, CA,
nicknamed Little Iraq. In part one; she describes two teens, one who manages to
survive and the other who succumbs to the violence of Oakland's streets. Part two
talks about classes that are developed for high school as an outlet and a way
to transition into young men. Part 3 talks about a charter school structured to
plant early seeds of and college success in the lives of elementary and middle
school age black boys. These services offered help to prevent the day-to-day
hardships that many black males face where even their best friend may turn out
to be their deadly enemy. All these services for black youth are helping, but it
is not enough, the people of the community should stop being afraid and come
together to make a change.
